อาร์เอสเอส (RSS) คือ ข้อมูลที่อยู่ในรูปแบบเอ็กเอ็มแอล (XML) ที่กำหนดขึ้นมาเพื่อใช้ในการกระจายข้อมูลออกไปสู่เว็บไซต์ (Website Syndication) เว็บบล็อก (Web Blog) หรือ อาร์เอสเอสรีดเดอร์ (RSS Reader) การให้บริการอาร์เอสเอสถูกมองว่าเป็นผู้ป้อนข้อมูล ดังนั้นเว็บเพจที่นำข้อมูลไปใช้มักถูกเรียกว่าเว็บฟีด (Web Feeder) หรืออาร์เอสเอสฟีดเดอร์ (RSS Feeder)
ตัวย่อต่าง ๆ ที่ใช้อ้างถึงมาตรฐานนี้ :

เทคโนโลยีของอาร์เอสเอสทำให้คุณสามารถรับข่าวสารจากเว็บไซต์ที่ให้บริการข้อมูลข่าวสารในรูปแบบอาร์เอสเอส ซึ่งตามปกติแล้วเว็บไซต์เหล่านี้มีการเปลี่ยนแปลง และเพิ่มเติมเนื้อหาบ่อยๆ หากคุณต้องการใช้เทคโนโลยีนี้ คุณต้องติดตั้งโปรแกรมรวมกลุ่มข่าวสารไว้ด้วย (news aggregator หรือ RSS aggregator) โดยหลักการของโปรแกรมลักษณะนี้ก็คล้ายกับโปรแกรมรับอีเมลนั่นเอง หลังจากนั้นก็เพียงไปลงทะเบียนรับข่าวสารจากเว็บไซต์ต่างๆ ที่ให้บริการอาร์เอสเอส ซึ่งบริการเหล่านี้ไม่เสียค่าใช้จ่ายใดๆ แต่ข้อมูลที่ได้จะเป็นเพียงหัวข้อข่าว หรือรายละเอียดโดยย่อเท่านั้น ส่วนเนื้อหา หรือข้อความหลักของข่าวนั้น ก็จะมีลิงก์เชื่อมโยงไปให้อีกทีหนึ่ง

รูปแบบอาร์เอสเอสที่กระจายหัวข้อข่าว หรือเนื้อหาข่าวโดยย่อ พร้อมกับลิงก์เชื่อมโยงไปยังเนื้อหานั้นๆ รวมถึงรายละเอียดทางเทคนิคอื่นๆ ของของข่าวสารนั้น ผ่านรูปแบบข้อมูลเอ็กซ์เอ็มแอล เราเรียกรูปแบบในลักษณะนี้ว่าอาร์เอสเอสฟีด (RSS Feed), เว็บฟีด (WebFeed), อาร์เอสเอสสตรีม (RSS Stream), อาร์เอสเอสแชนแนล (RSS Channel) และประโยชน์ที่ตามมาก็คือ เราสามารถรู้ได้ว่าเว็บไซต์นั้นมีการเปลี่ยนแปลงข้อมูลใหม่หรือไม่ โดยใช้โปรแกรมรวมกลุ่มข่าวสารเป็นเครื่องมือคอยตรวจสอบให้ได้เรื่อยๆ ตามที่ต้องการ

อาร์เอสเอส (RSS = Really Simple Syndication) [manager.co.th]

คือรูปแบบไฟล์ของภาษาเอ็กเอ็มแอล (XML) ใช้สำหรับการแบ่งปันหัวเรื่อง ข้อมูลบนเว็บไซต์ออกไป หรือสำหรับดึงข่าวจากเว็บไซต์ต่าง ๆ มาแสดงบนเว็บเพจ แต่ก่อนอาจมีการสร้างหัวเรื่องของข่าวจากเว็บไซต์ต้นแบบ จากนั้นนำลิงค์ไปติดที่หน้าเว็บเพจของเรา การแก้ไขถ้าเว็บไซต์ต้นแบบแก้ไข เว็บเพจของเราจะต้องทำการแก้ไขตามด้วย

นอกจากนักท่องเน็ตหรือนักพัฒนาเว็บไซต์ที่ใช้ประโยชน์จากอาร์เอสเอสแล้ว ผู้ใช้ที่ต้องการข่าวสารข้อมูลยังสามารถใช้โปรแกรมประเภท RSS Reader ดึงหัวข้อข่าวสารไปอ่านได้โดยตรง โดยไม่ต้องเข้าถึงเว็บไซต์ที่ให้บริการ ทำให้ย่นเวลาในการเข้าถึงข้อมูลได้
รู้ได้อย่างไรว่าเว็บไหนมีบริการ RSS

สังเกตได้จากสัญลักษณ์ที่มีเครื่องหมายอย่างด้านล่าง มักพบบริเวณเมนูหลักของเว็บ หรือบริเวณส่วนล่างของหน้าเว็บเพจ

เอ็กเอ็มแอล (XML = eXtensible Markup Language)

เป็นภาษาชนิดหนึ่งที่ใช้สำหรับเขียนเอกสารประเภท markup โดยจะมีการใช้ tags ที่มีลักษณะเช่นเดียวกับภาษา HTML เพื่อกำหนด แยกแยะประเภทของข้อมูลให้ชัดเจนมากยิ่งขึ้น จุดเด่นของ XML คือเป็นโปรแกรมที่ยืนหยุ่นมาก และไม่ขึ้นกับโปรแกรมประยุกต์หรือระบบปฏิบัติการใดๆ

RSS stands for (Really Simple Syndication). Basically RSS feeds are xml files which are provided by many websites so you can view their contents on your own websites rather than browsing their site. Suppose you are a movie lover and you want to get the list of top 5 movies from 10 websites. One way will be to visit all 10 websites and see the top 5 list. This method though is used in general by lot of people but its quite tiring method. It will take you 10-15 minutes to browse all the websites and see the top 5 list of movies. One easy way will be if those movie websites provides RSS feeds to be used by the users. If they provide RSS feeds you can embed them in your page and now you don't have to browse all the websites since the information is available on a single page. Hence, this saves you a time and a lot of browsing.

Most of the Blogs websites provide RSS feeds so you can embed your or someone's else latest entries of blog on your website. In this article we will see how we can embed RSS feeds to our webform using Asp.net.
